Inmates refuse to come down off Ashley Youth Detention Centre roof

Four inmates who refused to leave a roof at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre have given in after six hours.

MIDNIGHT: FOUR inmates have climbed down from a roof at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre after a six-hour standoff with police.

Tasmania Police said the youths removed themselves from the roof “of their own volition” at 10.42pm.

10.30PM: FOURinmates refusing to climb down from a roof are keeping police at bay at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

Tasmania Police have been trying to negotiate with the youths who are “on the roof and refusing to come down” since arriving at the scene near Deloraine just before 5pm.

As of 9.30pm, the youths remained on the roof.

There are no reported injuries.

Earlier in the evening, police asked the media to “move to a location that is not visible to the facility”.

Police said they were working with staff to contain the inmates.

They said there was no suggestion any of the detainees would be able to get out of the facility from their rooftop position.

Ashley Youth Detention Centre is Tasmania’s only juvenile justice facility.

It houses juvenile offenders of both sexes, aged 10-18 years.

The centre is staffed 24 hours per day.

EARLIER: A GROUP of youths have made their way onto a roof at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre and are refusing to come down.

Tasmania Police are currently responding to the incident near Deloraine, which started shortly after 5pm.

A statement released at 5.24pm said “several youths are on the roof and are refusing to come down”.

There have been no reported injuries.

It is managed by Children and Youth Services, which is an operational unit of the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services.

The facility houses juvenile offenders of both sexes aged 10-18 years.

It has a 50-bed capacity and comprises four accommodation units — Bronte, Huon, Franklin and Liffey.

The centre is staffed 24 hours per day.
