Nostalgic music fans pining for the good old days are in for a treat on November 2 when a stacked line-up of 90s alternative bands hits the stage at Kirwan Tavern.

Normally a showcase for local talent, this year’s Hotter Than Hell tour has taken on an international flavour with US ska rockers Less Than Jake joined by Aussie legends Regurgitator, Jebediah, The Bennies, and Little Birdy, who are reforming after 14 years.

Catapulted to superstardom with their 1997 album Slightly Odway album, Jebediah will play it in full, while Less Than Jake is playing their classic album Hello Rockview, and Little Birdy’s playing Big Big Love.

Jebediah’s lead singer Kevin Mitchell said he was looking forward to revisiting Slightly Odway on the tour, saying the Triple J staple attracted massive crowds when the album was last showcased during their 20th anniversary tour in 2015.

“I’ve always loved that album, for what it’s done for the band, you know, it launched us, and it’s given us a long career,” Mitchell said.

“I came to realise with a bit of time and a bit of space, was that all those things that kind of made it kind of different, and to my ears, a little bit awkward, that’s the stuff that people really loved about it. That’s what made it unique and made it stand out from everything else.”

He said Jebediah frequently visited Townsville over the decades, revelling in the appreciation that was sometimes lacking from hard-to-please metropolitan audiences.

“I love touring North Queensland, just because it’s so different to the rest of Australia,” he said.

“I don’t feel that pressure (to please) so much. I feel like people come ready to have a good time and all you need to do as a band is just give them a good time and not f--- up.”

Mitchell was looking forward to seeing the comeback of fellow Western Australians Little Birdy, who he expects to deliver for the crowd with material from “three brilliant records”.

After a six year absence, Less Than Jake drummer Matt Yonker said he couldn’t wait to party with their friends down under.

“Aussie audiences easily hang with the rest of the world. I think they may even be a touch crazier. And that’s a compliment, I’m really looking forward to the mayhem,” Yonker said.
