Filling the void left by Groovin The Moo, a new music festival headlined by Australian hip hop royalty is expected to attract thousands of punters into the Townsville CBD next month.
Presented by TEG Live, the One Street One Day festival has ambitious plans to take over towns across Australia during its inaugural year, with Townsville to be the first cab the rank on July 26.
Rooney Street’s Central Park will be ground zero for a spectacular day of entertainment, where Hilltop Hoods will headline, supported by a variety of Aussie acts including DMA’s, Meg Mac, In Hearts Wake, Coterie, Brad Cox, Mia Wray, and two unnamed Townsville acts.
Having last played to a pumping crowd of 10,000 fans in the big top tent during the 2022 NTI Townsville 500 Supercars event, Hilltop Hoods’ MC Pressure (Daniel Howe Smith) could not wait to get back up to Townsville.
“Every time we’ve been up that way, we’ve had such an amazing reception, and a ton of people have turned out. We’ve been going there for years as well, so it’s one of those places … (where) we love going and can’t wait to come back,” Pressure said.
“Since Covid, there’s been such a sort of downturn and collapse of festivals, so it’s incredibly encouraging, not just for the music industry just but for the town itself, to see that there’s a new festival on the horizon and someone’s put their hand up and stepping up to fill the hole, because it needs to be done, and we’re stoked to be part of that.”
It’s been a “hell of a ride” to the top for the Adelaide group, which began making joke raps about their teachers in the mid-1990s, before hoisting hip hop from the underground into the mainstream with six number on albums (an Australian record), and the most songs (23) in Triple J’s Hottest 100.
The band’s chart domination was expected to continue on August 1, when their first album in six years – Fall From The Light – will be released, with Pressure promising some new tunes would be aired, alongside their crowd favourites.
He urged NQ’s music fans to “rock up in numbers with a good attitude, come to have fun”.
“We’re hoping the crowd will turn out just as well (as last time). Townsville likes to drink and party, and that fits us perfectly,” he said.
TEG’s head of global touring Tim McGregor said they were thrilled to roll out these exciting new music events to the outer regions and give people the opportunity to experience the best of Australian music.
Acting Townsville Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the council was proud to be supporting this brand new festival, saying it was a “real boon for our city”.
“Townsville has a long history of championing the arts – our residents certainly know how to throw their support behind musicians from far and wide, as well as our burgeoning local talent,” Ms Greaney said.
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith said it was shaping up to be a blockbuster weekend, with the Cowboys kicking off on Friday night, Hilltop Hoods headlining Saturday, and chamber music echoing through the city.
The festival was supported by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The state government announced Destination 2045 on Monday, its road map to supercharge Queensland’s tourism future by leveraging opportunities for the lead up and legacy of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Among its six strategic priorities was “making Queensland Australia’s event capital – attracting world-class events for locals and visitors”.
