Today host Sarah Abo has pulled out of Carols By Candlelight after suffering a serious health issue.

Abo was set to co-host the show alongside David Campbell but was absent when the Christmas Eve show kicked off at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne at 8pm on Tuesday night.

Campbell hosted the show on his own after Abo was hospitalised on Tuesday and underwent surgery to remove her appendix.

The well-liked presenter, who has previously co-hosted Carols with Campbell, was unwell on Monday and did not take part in the show’s rehearsal.

Campbell announced to the audience at the Music Bowl and those watching on the Channel 9 broadcast that Abo would not be part of the show.

“My beautiful co-host Sarah has been struck down with appendicitis and by doctor orders she has been told to stay home and rest,” Campbell said on stage explaining Abo’s absence.

“Apparently hosting a three hour national TV show is not taking it easy.

“I have seen her (Sarah) host the Today show in her sleep but this – too much.

“I just want to say Sarah, get better. I miss you pal, right here.”

Campbell then encouraged the 10,000 people at Carols to wish Abo “Merry Christmas.”

“We miss you a lot,” he said.

Carols by Candlelight, now in its 87th year, is a beloved Christmas Eve tradition and raises funds for Vision Australia.

Performers on the bill this year include Dami Im, Emma Watkins, the cast of Sister Act The Musical, featuring Casey Donovan, Rob Mills, Bobby Fox, Bonnie Anderson, Mitch Tambo, Beau Woodbridge and the cast of Dear Evan Hansen, Ben Abraham, the star of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, Ruva Ngwenya, David Hobson, Marina Prior, Silvie Paladino, Denis Walter, Sammy J and Colin Lane.

Melbourne’s John Foreman once again is the show’s musical director.
