Governor’s Kate Warner’s term extended by six months

Popular governor Kate Warner will serve an extra six months due to the extraordinary circumstance of the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier said.

TASMANIAN Governor Kate Warner’s term will be extended by six months, Premier Peter Gutwein has told parliament.

Professor Warner’s term will now expire on June 9 next year.

She has been Governor since December 2014 and was last year was declared cancer free after battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Mr Gutwein said Professor Warner was held in high regard by all Tasmanians.

“Under normal circumstances without a pandemic to deal with, I would now be working through the process to select and appoint a new Governor,” he said.

“However, given the circumstances the state is facing in responding to COVID‑19, Her Majesty the Queen has approved my request to extend the term of office of Her Excellency for a further period of six months.

“The additional six month extension will provide stability to this important role and enable me to undertake the detailed and important work of making a recommendation to the Queen on the next Governor of Tasmania.

“This extension will mean Her Excellency will have represented the Queen in Tasmania for more than six years.”

The announcement was welcomed by the opposition parties.
