A Gold Coast mother who escaped domestic violence is now copping the brunt of brazen thieves.

The Labrador woman said a basement storage unit at the plush unit block had been targeted five times – two of them by the same offender.

Since moving to the ‘secure’ apartment along the Broadwater three and a half years ago, the single mother said she had been fighting for better security to prevent the recurring break-ins and ensure the safety of her children.

She said the building’s body corporate needed to implement safety improvements.

“I moved here to get away from domestic violence and it was advertised as secure and safe,” she said.

“The first time my bike was stolen, second time it must have been kids as they’ve pulled the locked gate – it was a stretchy lock – and squeezed through,” she said.

“It’s been a work in progress to try and stop all this now they just cut all the locks, then there’s guys who cut the entire fence. They’ve even stolen people’s jetskis and trailers.”

Among the items stolen include fishing rods, a bike and kids skateboards with the mother nursing a loss of around $3,000.

“This doesn’t need to happen – if I was asked I would give. We get collect the bread from Bakers Delight twice a week and we go and hand it out to the local community,” she said.

The concerned resident said one of the alleged offenders had broken in around midnight, leaving her worried of potential interactions with would-be-crims in the future.

“If I had’ve been down there I would’ve seen them – that’s what my concern was, because I have kids, what if we had of interrupted them,” she said.

The mother has pushed management to introduce more cameras into the building, including cameras on every floor and extra CCTV in the basement carpark, but said more needed to be done to protect private property and resident safety.

QBS Strata Management were contacted for comment.

Police confirmed a 39-year-old was due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on October 25 charged with enter premises and commit indictable offence by break in relation to one of the alleged break-ins.
