Construction has begun on a $30m expansion of Coomera’s The Boat Works as the city’s superyacht sector continues to boom.

CONSTRUCTION has begun on a $30m expansion of Coomera’s The Boat Works as the city’s superyacht sector continues to boom.

New superyacht sheds and storage space and a vessel showroom are being built as part of Stage 5 of the precinct, the centre of the city’s marine industry.

The number of hard stands for superyachts will double as part of the works which are expected to be completed by December.

Boat Works CEO Tony Longhurst said demand for the vessels had remained strong despite the tough economic times.

“Building on the success of the superyacht facility that we opened in January 2020, we are adding more infrastructure for tenants and customers,” he said.

“There is a huge demand to accommodate more boats undercover and our 70 sheds have reached capacity. We are proud to offer new opportunities for growth for all our marine service partners within the facility. Their success in turn enhances our operational efficiency.

“The Boat Works has evolved to provide two world-class yards with high-end facilities and lifting equipment, while maintaining our focus on customer service.

“By this time next year, the superyacht yard will have doubled in size.”

The superyacht industry has undergone a dramatic growth in the past three years, with several developers now creating projects tailored towards the sector.

Gordon Corp is weeks away from breaking group on its $300m Mantaray Marina and Residences on a vacant site next to Mariner’s Cove which will feature Australia’s first dedicated private superyacht marina.

The complex will feature 67 berths of up to 60m each for superyachts in its marina.

Meanwhile the Mariner’s Cove site will also be redeveloped into a Ritz-Carlton by Giannarelli Group, alongside joint venture partners Pelligra Group which will have a 170-room hotel and berths for up to 67 superyachts

AIMEX-Superyacht Australia CEO David Good said the industry was going from strength to strength.

“The facilities are well and truly needed – superyacht visitation and the domestic market keep on booming,” he said.

“Since January 2020, the Australian charter yacht fleet has grown from 59 charter vessels to now, 120.

“In the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, there will more demand than ever, especially for refit and maintenance facilities. “
