A Gold Coast driver has been slapped with a whopping fine and had their licence suspended by police for driving more than 40km/h over the speed in a school zone.
Officers were conducting morning patrols on Anne St, Southport outside Keebra Park State High School on Wednesday, February 19 when a white Tesla was travelling in the opposite direction.
The vehicle was clocked travelling at 92km/h, more than double the 40km/h school zone speed limit. Footage released from a dashcam on-board a police vehicle shows the Tesla pass officers at a rate of knots before they perform a U-turn and intercept the dangerous driver.
Road policing Chief Superintendent Garrath Channells said the driver’s speed was “inexcusable” and officers would not tolerate the behaviour in school zones.
“School zones exist for one crucial reason – to keep our children safe,” Chief Superintendent Channells said.
“Speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to stop quickly if a child crosses the road while entering or leaving school.”
The Tesla driver, a 38-year-old man from Pacific Pines, was slapped with a $1,854 traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h. He received 8 demerit points and his licence was suspended for 6 months.
