A married couple who missed their flight after being caught up in the Q1 Resort and Spa fire say they were charged $228 for the extra night they were forced to stay.
NSW holiday-maker Claire Kosac and her husband visited the Glitter Strip to support a friend who competed in the Gold Coast Marathon.
They were due to check out of their accommodation at the Q1 last Monday when a rubbish-bin fire forced hundreds of people to evacuate the building.
Mrs Kosac was one of nine people taken to hospital in stable conditions, but was later given the all-clear.
The NSW woman said she and her husband missed their Monday morning flight during the chaos.
“So we had to change our flights and then we contacted the Q1 saying that we needed to stay (an extra night),” Mrs Kosac said.
After checking out of the resort the next day, she was shocked to discover the Q1 had charged them $228 for the extra night.
Mrs Kosac said the resort did not discuss the charge with her beforehand or have any follow-up communication with them after the fire.
“A refund would be good. I personally haven’t contacted them though, my friend who came with us, she managed the bookings and she didn’t get anywhere when she contacted Q1,” the NSW resident said.
The Q1 was contacted for comment, but did not respond by deadline.
