A Gold Coast ironwoman and councillor are unlocking their inner doggie paddle as they prepare themselves and their four-legged friends for the city’s first race of its kind.
Gold Coasters and their furry friends will trot down to Pizzey Park to compete in the Paddle and Paws event on May 2.
The competition will be a combined 100m swim and a 500m run through the pine forest at the Miami park.
Division 12 councillor Nick Marshall said owners will be limited to only as fast, or as slow as their dog can go.
He said he was “really excited” to be entering the event with his six-year-old cavoodle, Bowie.
“Bowie is confident in the water and land, but like both of my daughters he just takes some motivating,” Mr Marshall said.
“He thinks he is the David Hasselhoff of dogs.”
“It’s a fun way to promote fitness, healthy and active lifestyles”.
More than 60 Gold Coasters, including ironwoman Bonnie Hancock and her Staffy, Boss are enrolled into the event.
Mr Marshall said he was inspired by the annual Christmas Eve dog swimming race, ‘Scotland Island race’, in Sydney.
“I’ve had the idea for over a decade,” he said.
“But I finally have the opportunity to make it happen.”
Mr Marshall said there will be food trucks, live music and city stalls at Pizzey Park from 3pm on May 2.
“Pizzey Park is a fantastic place for recreational activities and has a large dog walking community,” he said.
“It’s all happening at Pizzey Park.”
