PLANS have been revealed for a $2.5 million upgrade of a notorious Nerang intersection.
Traffic lights will be added and the road widened to provide dedicated turning lanes at the junction of Yalkuri Drive, Willawong Crescent and Beaudesert-Nerang Road in a bid to make it easier for traffic to safely enter and exit the residential streets.
Turning lanes will also be added at the intersection with Riverlea Waters Drive and at the entrance to Country Paradise Parklands.
The area has seen numerous near misses and crashes in recent years, including a 2016 incident involving three vehicles in which a three-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl had to be cut free from a car.
Gaven MP and Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the upgrade was badly needed.
“This is something our community has been looking forward to, with many families and tradies telling me about the number of close calls they’ve had,” Minister Scanlon said.
“The Palaszczuk Government isn’t just investing in the M1 and second M1 – we know safer local roads are important too. That’s why we’re upgrading this intersection as well as the Maudsland Road intersection and Nerang-Murwillumbah Road.
“The design is being sent out to residents and businesses, and people can get more information from the project team over coming weeks at Nerang Fair Shopping Centre and Vince Hinde Park.
“Construction is expected to start later this year and take about six months to complete, weather permitting.”
Public consultation sessions will be held at Nerang Fair Shopping Centre on Monday 27 March (11am-2pm) and Thursday 30 March (3-6pm), and Vince Hinde Park on Saturday 1 April (10am-1pm).
