A man has been shot dead by police after a confrontation with officers at Arundel.
Acting Superintendent Michelle Piket told media on Thursday afternoon the man was fatally shot when attempting to carjack a vehicle on Brisbane Rd, outside A.B. Paterson College.
The man, who was wanted by police for an unrelated matter, first came to police attention about 9.15am when he was sighted at Brown St, Labrador.
Officers attempted to arrest him but he pulled a firearm and fled on foot.
A short while later, at Calvary Court, he confronted a pair of residents, a woman and her son.
The man threatened the son with a firearm, then struck an 83-year-old woman as he fled the scene in a stolen Honda CR-V.
She was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor leg injuries.
Police successfully deployed tyre deflation devices on the man’s stolen vehicle, which came to a stop on Brisbane Rd.
A second confrontation with police ensued, Superintendent Piket said, and the man was shot by an officer when he attempted a second carjacking.
As a result of the Brisbane Rd incident, a teenager was transported to GCUH with injuries from glass shards.
The teenager was not in the vehicle that the man attempted to carjack, Superintendent Piket said.
She said part of the investigation by Ethical Standards Command will centre upon whether the man actually discharged his weapon at police, and if so, how many times.
A resident on Madasin Cl, which runs parallel to Brisbane Rd near where the shooting took place, said he believed he heard three gunshots.
Another resident of the same street said he thought he heard four or five gunshots.
“It was bom-bom-bom-bom,” he said.
“It was so clear.”
Medical assistance was provided by police and paramedics but the man died from his injuries at the scene.
A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance Service said five crews attended the incident where they initially treated the man in a life-threatening condition with chest and abdominal injuries.
Later in the morning, Calvary Court had reopened, but neighbouring Clovelly Place, which runs parallel to the scene of the theft of the Honda CR-V, was closed off by a police unit.
A local resident opposite Clovelly Place told this masthead she saw a lady being taken away by ambulance. She said she watched the incident unfold from her kitchen window, but declined to share any further details.
A neighbour said he heard yelling and then what sounded like a gunshot, before a vehicle sped off.
Back at Arundel, road blocks were in place between Arundel Dr and Marble Arch Pl, Arundel for a significant portion of the day.
Two officers were stationed in the filter lane on Arundel Dr preventing traffic turning left towards the incident.
One of the officers manning the roadblock described what had unfolded as a “major incident”.
In less than five minutes at Arundel Dr, this masthead witnessed three additional police units descend upon the crime scene.
Motorists were getting found out by the sudden road closure, with one telling this masthead he didn’t know how he would get home.
The Gold Coast Bulletin was been told there was a Queensland Police inspector at the scene in Arundel helping to direct the investigation.
In a statement, police said the incident was under investigation by Ethical Standards Command, with the investigation subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
