An MP says he is concerned for the safety of local residents after a shocking incident in which a limo driver’s car was stolen as he helped a couple unload their bags.

The incident happened on Commodore Dr in Surfers Paradise about 9.25pm on Sunday, when the limo pulled up after bringing the couple back from Brisbane Airport.

As the driver was unloading their bags a car pulled up containing a number of youths, one of whom then got into the limo – a silver Holden Caprice – before both cars sped off, leaving the limo driver stranded without his car or his phone.

Police told the Bulletin they had recovered the stolen car at Beenleigh on Tuesday morning. They are appealing for witnesses as they continue to investigate the incident.

“Police are investigating the theft of a limousine at Surfers Paradise on July 9,” a spokesperson said.

“Around 9.25pm on July 9 a limousine driver was removing luggage from the boot of his silver 2012 Holden Caprice on Commodore Drive when he saw a white coloured small SUV pull up next to the driver’s side door of his vehicle. An unknown offender got out of the SUV and entered the unlocked driver’s side and drove off with the vehicle. The car was not running but keys were in the ignition.

“The driver’s mobile phone was in the vehicle when it was stolen.

“The vehicle was since located in Horizon Drive at Beenleigh around 8.35am (on Tuesday) with the keys in the ignition and car still running. A neighbour in the street reported the car to police.

“Police are appealing for any witnesses to theft or anyone who has any information to offer police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

It is understood residents in the area are now considering hiring private security to patrol their streets at night following the shocking incident – an approach that Police Commissioner Katrina Carroll last week said could have “merit”.

Surfers Paradise MP John Paul Langbroek said that was something a number of communities in his electorate had already done.

“It’s no reflection of our police, they just don’t have enough resources and support,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Instead of recruiting 1400 extra police, the numbers are down across the state.”

Mr Langbroek said the brazen nature of Sunday’s theft had shocked locals, who were now concerned for their safety.

“It’s a sign of how brazen these kids are, that they opportunistically just wander around and see something like that.

“The people come home. They’re being dropped off. And the limo driver literally gets out to unpack the car and in that moment they jump in and steal the car.

“The government is just sitting on its hands here. This is a local couple that has gone on a trip and come back to this.

“I’m concerned about the safety of locals and residents.”
