A man has been charged with robbing a 14-year-old while armed with a knife at one of the Gold Coast’s most popular public spaces.

Joshua Shaun Jeffs allegedly targeted the young teenager at Southport’s Broadwater Parklands on August 23.

The 28-year-old faced Southport Magistrates Court on Friday charged with armed robbery.

Mr Jeffs’ bail application was opposed by police prosecutions, with prosecutor Corey Cook saying he posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending or skipping court if released.

Mr Cook said the Browns Plains man’s criminal history included jail sentences and dated convictions for failing to appear at court.

“It’s not (an alleged) standard robbery ... it’s not (an alleged) shopfront robbery or something like that, which isn’t great by any stretch of the imagination,” he said.

“This is a very vulnerable person in the community, a child who’s 14, and the defendant ... has (allegedly) threatened the child with a knife to take the possessions.”

Duty lawyer Brianna Edwards said it was not yet clear what specific evidence was being relied upon to identify her client as the alleged culprit and would require further material to be disclosed.

Magistrate Joan White granted Mr Jeffs’ bail, saying she accepted he had no similar offences on his criminal history and his case would be subject to some delay.

His case was adjourned to September 17.
