A man has avoided further time behind bars for his role in an alleged attack in which a man was later forced to cut his own penis.

Southport District Court was told Jaydon Keith Karaitiana was at a Mermaid Beach home on September 7, 2020 with his two co-accused Jayden Daniel Sobey and Adam Robert O’Brien.

Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Kelso said it was alleged Mr O’Brien was the first to as

sault the man inside and worked with Karaitiana to keep the man from fleeing.

It was heard that while the man was on the ground, Karaitiana – allegedly again with Mr O’Brien – jumped on his body and stomped on his head.

Ms Kelso said the violence would have been “terrifying” for the man and that it was good fortune, rather than good planning, that he did not sustain more serious injuries.

The court was told Mr O’Brien and Mr Sobey were both facing more serious charges in relation to the allegations, with Karaitiana pleading guilty to the lesser indictment last year.

It will be alleged at the pair’s trial in April that they then forced the man to cut off a small part of his penis. Karaitiana is not said to have been involved.

Ms Kelso said the 30-year-old was arrested in July of the following year.

It was while Karaitiana was in custody at the Capricornia Correctional Centre that he joined dozens of other prisoners in a riot that caused close to $1m in damages to the prison.

The court was told Karaitiana was involved in about eight of the 18 hours the riot lasted for, climbing onto the roof of the activities building and encouraging other prisoners who were graffitiing or causing other damage to the roof.

It was heard the New Zealand-born man had not reoffended since being released on bail almost a year ago and was working to keep turning his life around.

Karaitiana pleaded guilty to one count each of deprivation of liberty and riot, and two of common assault.

He was sentenced to 15 months’ jail with immediate parole.
