Jaydon Karaitiana: Man pleads guilty to role in alleged Mermaid Beach home invasion

A man involved in an alleged home invasion during which a man was later forced to cut off part of his penis has returned to court. Read the latest here.

A Gold Coast man has pleaded guilty to his role in an alleged home invasion in which another man was later forced to cut off part of his penis.

Jaydon Keith Karaitiana fronted Southport District Court on Monday, pleading guilty to one count of deprivation of liberty and two of common assault.

He was previously charged with grievous bodily harm and torture, but both charges were discontinued this week after it was agreed there was no evidence he was involved in the alleged victim’s penis being cut.

It is alleged Karaitiana and his two co-accused – Jayden Daniel Sobey and Adam Robert O’Brien – broke into a Mermaid Beach home on September 7, 2020.

A 35-year-old man inside the home was allegedly assaulted before being forced to sit on the couch and given a serrated knife, with which he tried to cut off a small part of his penis.

Karaitiana’s lawyer Vered Turner told the court this week that her client was also facing an unrelated charge of riot in another jurisdiction.

He will remain on bail before his sentencing on December 7.

His two co-accused – who are still charged with grievous bodily harm and torture – have both indicated they plan to fight the charges.

Mr O’Brien’s trial was due to begin this week but has since been delayed, with both his and Mr Sobey’s cases to be mentioned on November 3.
