Truckie busted in Coomera

A truckie who allegedly blew more than six times the alcohol limit has revealed plans to fight the charges against him on the day he was due to be sentenced.

Gurjeet Singh Gill’s case was expected to be finalised in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, where he is charged with being in charge of a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor and obstructing police.

The Mango Hill man appeared in person, but in a sudden development his case was adjourned and his lawyers granted leave to withdraw.

Police allege Mr Gill was seen driving on Dreamworld Parkway shortly before he was found by the side of the road – with his engine still running and an empty bottle of liquor near him – on December 12.

The 44-year-old allegedly refused to submit to a roadside breath test and grappled with police during his arrest. It is alleged he later recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.311.

Speaking to reporters outside the Southport courthouse after his brief adjournment, Mr Gill said he planned to find new lawyers to help him fight the allegations because he “needed justice”.

He claimed he was sleeping in the truck while on his break and had drunk about “half a bottle” of alcohol.

“I’m not driving, I was sleeping,” Mr Gill said.

“If I’m driving then I would say yes, I would plead guilty, but I was not driving.”

His case will return to court on February 26.
