Southern Gold Coast locals are split over council’s decision to upgrade a precinct near a popular beach which will soon include a new path, pedestrian plaza and a viewing platform.
On Tuesday, the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) shared their plans to renew the area to the south of Currumbin Creek, near Currumbin Rock.
The upgrade will include a renewed 210m training wall, a new 110m-long and 4m-wide beachfront footpath, beach access and a pedestrian plaza with a viewing platform facing the Gold Coast skyline.
Residents were divided over the upgrade, with some saying it was as a “great idea” while others said it was “not needed”.
“The Rock wall needs replacing and better access with a path along the wall will be an asset,” Pauline Kershaw said.
Another said it was a “great” upgrade on “tired old facilities”.
“It seems like all of the development on the southern Gold Coast has put more money in council’s pocket to do things like this, the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre, the new boardwalk near the high school, Tallebudgera Oceanway upgrades and the Oceanway near the Currumbin Surf Club,” Ellen said.
“Increased development and population isn’t always bad.”
Linda Olsen said “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” and urged council to use the funds elsewhere.
“How about building a southern Gold Coast hospital,” she said.
Sandra Beckett added: “Dear Tommy, how about you fix the beaches, silted up waterways and local roads first”.
“We don’t need a pedestrian path on the beach, it’s called low tide.”
Local James Folino echoed the same remarks but said the money should be invested into an Oceanway at Mermaid Beach.
“Meanwhile the bike lane and walking path between Hedges Ave and Albatross Ave have been in a state of disrepair with potholes, lifted asphalt etc, for as long as I can remember,” he said.
“Probably costing council more in insurance claims that it would cost to fix it.”
