THE Gold Coast is set to get its first new RSL club in more than a decade.

The Logan Diggers Club has filed a development application with the Gold Coast City Council to open a satellite club at the Pimpama Junction shopping centre on Dixon Drive.

The club said a new Gold Coast branch was a logical step.

“The Logan Diggers Club has experienced rapid growth over the years and now, after commencing in 1986 only, has over 30000 members,” the club said in a letter to council. “Many of these members reside in the Pimpama area and as such, it is a natural extension of their current operations to provide a more direct service to their members in this local area.”

Its services will include a bar, lounge and outdoor dining with room for 50 people, kitchen and a gaming lounge with 35 machines.

Logan Diggers Club did not respond to the Bulletin’s requests for comment.

Area councillor Mark Hammel welcomed the proposal.

“I support any group that works with our veterans and it is exciting to have the first RSL here in more than a decade,” he said.

“I am aware there are a lot of service men and women both past and present who live in my division and I welcome any place they might feel comfortable and can access any services they may need.

“I look forward to seeing what the club puts forward.”

The project, lodged with the council this week, will go before the planning committee later this year.

It comes as many Gold Coast RSL organisations struggle to survive, faced by ageing membership and low funds.
