Gold Coast crime: Stolen car crashes through Elanora fence, driver remains on the run

A driver is on the run after a stolen car ploughed through a brick fence at a Gold Coast property overnight.

Bluesfest Byron Bay cancellation leaves fans and artists outraged

THE owners of a Gold Coast property which had its front fence destroyed by a stolen car say it was like a bomb going off.

The family “sat bolt upright in bed” when a Holden Barina, stolen from nearby Palm Beach, crashed through their brick fence at Nineteenth Ave, Elanora just before 1am on Sunday.

The driver, who appeared to be a teenage male, fled the scene, and it’s believed he tried to steal a car on nearby Zinnea St. But his attempt was thwarted by the owner.

Lino De Giusti, who has lived at the Nineteenth Ave property since 2007, said a woman who was witness to the crash called triple-0 and when she went to check on the driver, they had fled.

She had been driving down Nineteenth Ave when a “car came flying” down the bicycle lane and tried to overtake her, Mr De Giusti recalled.

“He must have lost control and launched into our front fence and gate,” he said.

Mr De Giusti’s son Jesse said his room was closest to the crash.

“I was asleep and we heard the bang, the big loud bang, that went off at 12.49am and basically woke up everyone in an instant,” he said.

“There was a car stuck in the brick wall. There was just bricks everywhere, honestly it was like a bomb went off. It was just absolutely everywhere. We had bricks to the front door.”

He said the family was up until 3.30am cleaning up the mess, which had also likely written off Mr De Giusti’s car.

“We’ve just got glass, little bits of brick and concrete everywhere. It’s quite a crappy Easter, to be honest with you. Given how things have been lately around here, we’ve heard a fair few things about people having break and enters, and stolen cars. And now we’ve got no fence … so that’s a bit of a worry,” Jesse De Giusti said.

He said he went looking for the driver towards Elanora State High School but couldn’t see anything.

“Going around and cleaning up people’s property like that and then just leaving the scene is an absolute joke,” he said of the situation.

“He must have been travelling, (the witness) was saying at least 100km/h. It’s a bloody 50 zone.”

No arrests have been made.
