It has been 11 months since the Gold Coast’s first-ever markets closed “for good” after 40 years of operation in the heart of Burleigh Heads.
The Gold Coast Art and Craft Market was forced to shut after managing director Damon Robbins was under the impression he could not renew its council permit.
However, on Sunday July 27, the cherished markets will be making a comeback which even Mr Robbins didn’t see coming.
“With the Oceanway path construction now completed council has retaken control of the park from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and the construction partners, enabling the reinstatement of the market permit,” he said.
Mr Robbins said the fact he was able to apply for a permit renewal was “not clearly communicated” in September last year.
“We found out (we could reopen) after council negotiated a temporary extension in October.”
The markets, which have been a breeding ground for many start-up businesses over the years, will return with a “slightly reduced” capacity.
“We are running a market with a slightly limited max number of 100 stalls to maintain community space access and the great ambience feel of this great location.
“It’s exciting we are returning to our original market home.”
The upheaval in September last year left more than 200 small business stallholders homeless, however Mr Robbins confirmed most would be returning to the beachfront location.
He also recommended those wanting to attend the markets to allow for extra time to find parking due to the ongoing Light Rail Stage 3 construction.
“Parking and access are still going to be constrained,” he said.
“Where possible, allow extra time, come in alternative transport, walk or ride, or park in the Alex Black Carpark and walk through Burleigh township and enjoy everything that is Burleigh.”
Mr Robbins said the markets were crucial for the Burleigh community and economy.
“As the first market location on the Gold Coast, this has been extremely important for both us and the local vendors to maintain a livelihood and viability in operating markets on the Gold Coast.”
The Gold Coast Art and Craft Market will be on the last Sunday of every month from 8am to 2pm, weather permitting.
