Police say they were initially treating an online viral video of a break-in at the Yo-Chi Broadbeach outlet “seriously” but it has since been revealed as a “fake”.
The marketing ploy for the hugely popular frozen yoghurt chain’s Glitter Strip shop worked well - with 14,000 shares and 25,000 likes for CCTV posted to its TikTok account seemingly depicting a Yo-Chi heist in full swing.
A masked man is seen on CCTV inside the Surf Parade shop furiously filling up buckets with the highly-craved treat in footage time stamped about 2am on the weekend.
The iloveyochi account posted a message with it: “Attention Gold Coast customers - unfortunately our Broadbeach store was broken into last night and a considerable amount of stock was taken.
“While we totally get the craving for Yo-Chi, this has been a tough loss, and we are relying on the support of our community to help identity the individual seen on CCTV.
“This has affected some of our operations so please bear with us while we restock the venue.”
A Queensland Police spokesman said initially “questions were raised” with about the footage and “we were treating it seriously”.
“But I understand that is not a break-in - I understand it is somethingthe store has done as a viral marketing thing.”
