Pacific Fair’s Help Medical GP Dr Tariqul Islam named best doctor on the Gold Coast
A Gold Coast doctor who has devoted his life’s work to his late mum and dad has been named the best GP in the region.
A Gold Coast doctor who has devoted his life’s work to his late parents has been named the best GP in the region.
Pacific Fair’s Help Medical GP Dr Tariqul Islam said he was “overwhelmed and humbled” by the title, voted by Gold Coast Bulletin readers.
“I’m thankful to everyone who placed their trust in me and to the amazing team I work with,” he said.
Dr Islam starting practising in 1992 in Bangladesh after continuing the family tradition of becoming a doctor, the career both his parents succeeded in.
“Unfortunately, both of my parents have passed away but they would be so proud of me for this achievement and recognition,” he said.
“I am sure they are watching this from heaven. I really miss them.”
Dr Islam – who moved to the Gold Coast in 2007 – said he grew up wanting to help people.
“Becoming a doctor has allowed me to combine my love of science with my passion for caring for others,” he said.
“When I first came to the Gold Coast, I was literally spellbound by its beauty and decided to make the Gold Coast my home. My love for this city is still as strong as it was decades ago.”
Dr Islam said being a family physician had its highs and lows, but creating bonds with patients was priceless.
“The most difficult part of my job is seeing patients face challenges that I can’t immediately fix,” he said.
“Medicine can do a lot, but not everything and it’s never easy to watch someone go through illness, uncertainty or loss.
“Having those tough conversations and supporting patients and their families through really hard moments can be emotionally heavy.”
Dr Islam urged Gold Coast residents to get the flu vaccine heading into Christmas as a strain of influenza was wreaking havoc across the region.
“I have heard from my colleagues in NSW and Victoria that this year’s strain of influenza appears to be very aggressive and very contagious as well,” he said.
“The good thing is we are at the tail end of it.
“Although vaccines do not protect you from having the flu 100 per cent of the time, the symptoms are generally much milder.”
