Emergency services rushed to the scene of a truck fire on the M1 which caused heavy delays for morning commuters.

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) was called after a semi-trailer caught on fire on the left southbound lane of the M1 near Oxenford at around 6.30am on Tuesday.

A QFD spokeswoman said the brakes of the truck had caught alight causing two lanes to be closed.

The fire crew was able to have the fire under control within 30 minutes.

At around 8.40am, a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said one lane remained closed and was reopened soon after.

The incident caused heavy delays during peak-hour, with traffic backed up to Ormeau.
