A man has been shot with a homemade pipe gun at a property in scenic Tallebudgera Valley on the Gold Coast.

The man suffered wounds to his head and shoulder in the shooting, which took place at about 12pm on Thursday.

It is understood the man took the weapon off the alleged shooter in the course of the incident.

That weapon is now in the possession of police.

However police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) in the area as heavily armed officers, assisted by the police helicopter, work to take the suspect safely into custody.

The public have been urged to avoid an exclusion zone encompassing Tallebudgera Creek Road to the west, Emily Lane to the north, and Petsche Creek Road to the east and Ryans Road to the south.

Emergency services were called just after midday to the incident.

A Queensland Police Spokesperson said the man who was shot was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with head and shoulder injuries in a non-life threatening condition.

It is believed the suspect and the alleged victim are known to each other. Both were said to be local men.

A local resident told the Bulletin the suspect being sought by police was an “experienced” bushman.

“I’ve been parked here since 3pm,” they said. “The guy who’s allegedly done it isn’t going to be going after us. He’s not on the road. He’s an experience bushman”

Speaking at the scene, Chief Inspector Les Bulluss said police were concerned by the nature of the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.

“It’s a homemade shotgun. It’s very well made and it’s something that’s quite concerning,” he said.

Chief Inspector Bulluss said police were concerned that the suspect in the case may have access to other weapons.

“The victim was able to get the firearm off him so we have possession of that, but that isn’t to say that there aren’t other weapons, etc in his possession,” he said.

The incident was the second shooting to rock the area in just the last month.

Linley Anne Anyos was critically injured after she was shot in the back while sitting in the passenger seat of a car at a Tallebudgera property around lunchtime on January 8.

The 33-year-old spent seven days in an induced coma.

Local residents said they were shocked to again find their area the subject of a major police operation.

“What is happening to our lovely quiet Valley,” one person asked. “Scary to drive home and be told by police to lock yourselves inside.”

Another resident posted: “So many sirens over the past hour, must have about 15 vehicles at least headed out the valley - stay safe everyone.”
