Aussie woman Rebecca Ode suffers horrific accident while in Bali

A frantic effort is underway to bring a young Aussie woman home from Bali, after she was mysteriously found with injuries beyond recognition.

The brother-in-law of a former Seaworld worker has revealed the horrific circumstances surrounding a mysterious accident that left his in-law’s face completely smashed apart.

Australian woman Rebecca Ode was involved in an accident while on an extended break in Bali, where she had been living since January this year.

It is understood Ms Ode had been in Nusa Lembongan when she was found “in and out of consciousness” on the ground around 9pm on Monday and “in a very bad way”.

Speaking to news.com.au, Ms Ode’s brother-in-law Jesse Wilton said the 36-year-old was

rushed to Ngoerah general hospital for brain, eye and reconstructive surgery.

“No one knows what happened to her,” he said of the accident.

“We have no idea how the injury happened … there was no alcohol … and the extent of her injuries is quite traumatic.”

Rebecca Ode, 36, a strong and caring, daughter, aunty and friend, urgently needs to be medically evacuated home from Bali.

Mr Wilton said his sister-in-law will lose at least one eye, and that the damage to her face is so severe it will never return to same structural condition again. 

“She has haemorrhaging on the brain and has a fractured cheek and jaw almost beyond repair,” he said.

“She will lose one eye if not two, and has titanium plates in collar bones.”

Mr Wilton, who is engaged to Ms Ode’s younger sister, has started a GoFundMe page to assist in the astronomical medical bills mounting for the family.

“The main outcome is to get her out of Bali and get her into Aussie care,” Mr Wilton said.

“[We are looking at] $140,000 for a Medivac and close to $70,000 in hospital bills since Monday.

“So we are bracing for a quarter of a million dollars just to get her home.”

Ms Ode will lose at least one eye from her horrific injuries.

Ms Ode's face will be unrecognisable after surgery.

Mr Wilton confirmed both Ms Ode’s mother Shari and sister Jordyn have travelled to Bali to be her side at the hospital.

“Her recovery journey is unknown [but] we know Bec will continue fighting her best fight with her strong will and determination,” Mr Wilton wrote on the fundraising page.

“Her family are going to bring her home no matter what it takes.”

Taking to Facebook on Thursday, Jordyn Ode gave further detail on the extent of her sister’s horrific injuries.

“It’s a terrifying thought to know that it is all but confirmed she has lost her vision in one eye,” she wrote.

“The impact completely pushed her eye out of her head, and the damage was so severe they weren’t sure they could save the eye at all.

“Her nose was split in half, and the cartilage was shattered. They had to rebuild her face, and I am desperate to get her home for professional help.

“The orthopaedic surgeons repaired her collarbone and shoulder, which were also hit. She now has a metal plate to keep her clavicle together.”

Ms Ode was a former employee at Seaworld on the Gold Coast.

Mr Wilton hopes the funds raised as part of the GoFundMe will assist with the astronomical bills already incurred since the accident. So far the fundraiser has reached almost $65,000 of the $100,000 target. Mr Wilton said Ms Ode’s insurance coverage was unclear but is being investigated.

“It will be one step at a time, but an expensive journey, if we all pull together we can make a big difference,” he said.

Taking to Facebook, Ms Ode’s mother Shari shared a heartfelt plea for anyone to donate if they have anything spare.

“She has some terrible injuries and we are trying to get her home as soon as she is stable,” Ms Ode wrote.

Friends and family were quick to respond with well wishes for “beautiful Becci”.

“My heart is breaking for you all … Can’t stop thinking of our beautiful girl,” one wrote.

“My heart breaks reading this! I am sending all my love and prayers for Bec!” another added.

“This is devastating news to hear. Prayers are with you all, especially for Becci.”
