WTF: Naughty neighbour, boxing Belinda, Reserve Rd wrecker

A pair of businesses that cater for vastly different clientele have found themselves the most unlikely of neighbours. Find our more in this week’s WTF.

They’re the little – and sometimes not so little – things that can really irk us. We’ve asked the people of Geelong to point out the problems that irritate and exasperate and have us all saying, woah, that’s frustrating!

NAUGHTY NEIGHBOUR

A pair of businesses that cater for vastly different clientele have found themselves the most unlikely of neighbours.

Sexyland, promoted as Australia’s number one adult shop, has moved its base ever so slightly south while works are undertaken at its usual Corio Quay Rd headquarters in North Geelong.

Its temporary home in the Hamilton Group’s Glasshouse precinct just happens to be next door to Kidz Crew, which has an indoor play centre for children of all ages, and also hosts birthday parties.

Having moved in only a week or so ago the adult playground, as opposed to the kids’ play centre, is expected to spend up to five months at its new location.

We’re not sure what Kidz Crew’s management think of the situation as they didn’t get back to us.

One punter, however, believes it will be a win for all.

“The kid has the best of times celebrating the birthday of their best friend,” the provocateur proposes.

“Mum or dad duck next door for the hour to pick up items of interest, surprising their partner upon their arrival home.

“And all the while, local businesses are benefiting.”

The logic seems sound, for some at least.

BOXING BELINDA

This one falls more under Woah, They’re Fighting. There’s no doubt politics is a battle.

We’ve seen it first hand over the last couple of months with our local government elections, not to mention what’s gone on in the US.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Geelong councillor Belinda Moloney has jumped in the ring after choosing not to run for a second term in City Hall.

Ms Moloney represented Torquay gym Bones MMA in a recent showcase event hosted by Geelong Boxing Club.

While she didn’t win her Muay Thai sparring match, according to club owner and director Lena Moxon, Ms Moloney enjoyed the challenge.

“She specifically said to me she had a great experience,” Ms Moxon said.

“She learned a lot, she really enjoyed the camaraderie.”

Ms Moloney, who boasts an impressive resume, which includes a PhD, appears to be turning her attention to a business in career coaching.

“More recently, I made a foray into politics, which wasn’t just a leap; it was a strategic move that reflected my commitment to influencing change within my local electorate,” her website read.

“These days, you can find me in the midst of my next level-up experiments – boxing and studying trauma-informed counselling – applying physical and academic challenges to sharpen the body and mind, respectively.”

Those wanting to draw from Ms Moloney’s expertise will have to stump up, her career coaching services range from a $300 basic package (on sale) to a $1600 three month executive edge leadership bootcamp.

RESERVE RD WRECKER

The guard rail at the corner of Reserve and Drews roads in Marshall has been hit many times.
The guard rail at the corner of Reserve and Drews roads in Marshall has been hit many times.

Layers of paint from scratched cars adorn a mangled guard rail on the corner of Drews and Reserve roads in Marshall.

For drivers turning left onto Reserve Rd from Drews Rd they must do with care, with no shoulder on the road and the guard rail almost butting up against the edge of the corner.

The once-smooth guard rail has been hit enough times that it has created sharper corners to navigate.

A Geelong Addy journalist found this out the hard way.

“I was leaving Marshall Station and although I have made that turn before it is easy to forget how wide you have to take it,” she said.

“I had plenty of time to make the turn but with cars travelling in the opposite direction I tried to ensure I was staying perfectly in my lane, unfortunately that meant turning the corner tight and now have quite the scratch across my passenger side doors.

“The guard rail looks mangled, and I have had at least one other friend do the same as me, and another who goes out of their way to avoid making a turn there for that reason.

“I think the guard rail either needs to be moved further back from the edge of the road, or the road needs to be widened – it’s such a busy road.”

Geelong council was contacted for comment.

COUNCIL’S CORPSE CAM

It’s a miracle this column was written this week, such has been the Geelong Advertiser’s interest in a certain YouTube live stream.

While many across the world tuned in as the results flowed in the US election, our reporters were huddled around a laptop with much anticipation, waiting and watching to catch the moment the corpse flower at the Geelong Botanic Gardens would bloom.

And we weren’t the only ones.

The amount of viewers hovered around the 100 mark throughout Wednesday.

We might give the council a bit of grief with WTF, but credit where credit is due to the genius who set up the corpse camera.

We’re all very much looking forward to saying: “Woah, that’s flowering.”
