A Geelong West restaurateur has been left wondering how thieves were able to steal a safe weighing more than 100kg in an overnight burglary that is now under police investigation.
Squires Loft Geelong managing partner Moussa Srour said the incident occurred around 3am Tuesday after the perpetrators smashed a rear window to gain access to the Preston St property, located just east of Pakington St.
He said while there was not a huge sum of cash in the safe, he believed the amount stolen was “in the thousands”.
The safe, which was bolted down but not concealed, also included a number of lost and found items.
Mr Srour scoured CCTV footage of the incident after reporting the incident to police.
“It seems like it’s random … I’m not sure,” he said.
“There’s some videos showing a guy breaking the glass and crawling on the floor, searching, opening a few cupboards.
“The safe (location) is obvious in our restaurant … everyone can see it.”
Mr Srour said a ute could be seen in the footage.
“You can see the face of a guy wearing a motorbike helmet,” he said.
A police spokesman said Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the burglary.
“It is believed that two male offenders smashed a window and gained access to a business on Preston Street,” he said.
“The offenders made off with a safe containing cash. An investigation remains ongoing.”
