A senior official has quit the state’s public insurer after seven years in the top job.

In an email, Transport Accident Commission (TAC) chief executive Joe Calafiore told staff he would wrap up his role after 13 years at the organisation on Monday morning.

“I feel enormous gratitude to have been a part of this great business,” he wrote.

“For someone who grew up in Geelong, leading an organisation that has played a critical role in this city’s ongoing transformation was a joy to be involved in.”

Mr Calafiore confirmed he’d remain on board until a new chief executive had started.

“Working for the TAC gave me the opportunity to learn from so many dedicated staff members, as well as the privilege of meeting clients and carers who despite often unspeakable tragedy, get up each day and do their best to live life,” he said.

“While there are so many people and groups I’d like to thank by name, I’ll play it safe by saying an enormous “thank you all” for what you do for our clients and the community each day.”

Mr Calafiore is the latest high profile Geelong leader to quit in recent months.

Late last year City Hall boss Martin Cutter, Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine’s Brett Ince and Committee for Geelong chief executive Jennifer Cromarty all announced they would resign from their respective organisations.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ben Flynn announced last year he would step down in March.

“Ben will be finishing at the end of March after four years in the role and taking six months off to travel around Australia with his young family before returning to Geelong in October 2023,” chamber president John Stekelenburg wrote in a November chamber update.

“Ben has made a significant contribution during his time and we will be sad to see him leave.”
