A popular Pakington St cafe and bakery is looking to build a new outlet in the rapidly transforming former industrial hub at the river end of the famed strip.

BJK Planning put plans to council that would see Born and Bread Bakehouse open on the far south of the street. It is not clear if the bakery, which currently sits several blocks further north at the corner of Marshall St, is relocating or expanding.

The Mills are set to be transformed in the coming years, with $180m plans that feature 10 separate buildings and 343 dwellings approved by Geelong council.

The state-of-the-art cafe would be situated at 376 Pakington St.

The plans would see the weatherboard house currently on the property, which sold for $1.5m in 2022, demolished.

The shop would have an overall floor space of 460sq m, with an upper-level office and storage area over the garage.

It would retain the opening hours of the current store down the road, with bakers to be present in the production area in the early hours.

Six car spaces are included in the proposal.

The plans will be open for public comment until September 24.

The plan continues the change from the area’s industrial roots into a retail and hospitality hotspot.

The shop sits half a block away from the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Woollen Mills at the river end, where cafes such as Line Up Coffee and Rebecchi’s have seen success alongside retail options and creative spaces.
