Planet Fitness set to open in Corio Village as part of centre’s expansion plans

Gym lovers will be able to get spray tans and massages after their workout when a new US fitness giant opens in Corio.

An international fitness giant will open in Corio Village as part of the centre’s plans to expand beyond traditional retail.

US gym franchise Planet Fitness will open a location on the ground floor, adjacent from the food court, in mid-June.

The gym will also offer a range of other wellness services and amenities like hydro massage, total body enhancement and spray tanning.

Corio Village owners, IP Generations, welcomed the gym giant’s arrival as part of the centre’s “strategic plan” to expand into new lifestyle, wellness and entertainment offerings.

Head of property Adam Davis said Planet Fitness would “complement the current tenancy mix”.

“The team has put a lot of work in over the past few years to change the face of the centre,” he said.

It comes as a family entertainment and hospitality venue, General Public, is set to open an eatertainery in the centre’s basement in mid-2023.

The venue will include 11 bowling lanes, arcade games, pool table, multiple function rooms and a bar serving craft beers and cocktails.

General Public marketing executive Jennifer Boulos said construction of the space was progressing well.

“General Public will be a great fit for the centre and the precinct,” Ms Boulos said.

“Right from the start we have designed it to be a place for families to enjoy something for all ages under one stylish roof.”

Planet Fitness chief operations officer Danielle Monroy said the franchise was focusing on expanding into regional areas.

“This was a huge opportunity to get into a centre that has all of your daily shopping needs

but is also strategically incorporating lifestyle opportunities in addition to traditional retail,”

Ms Monroy said.

She said the gym had “bold ambitions” to grow the Australian fitness market

“Only 12-15 per cent of Australians have a gym membership today. By focusing on the 75-80 per cent of people who are not engaged today with fitness, we aim to grow the industry to 20 per-cent by 2030,” she said.
