An Ocean Grove pizza delivery driver was busted with a “significant” amount of drugs and scales after police caught him driving erratically.

Grovedale man Jordan Jewell, 38, was pulled over shortly after leaving his home about 4am earlier this month when officers saw him swerve onto the wrong side of the road.

Jewell and another man were behaving “nervously” when the car was intercepted by police, so officers searched inside and found 56g of amphetamines.

Asked why he had such a large quantity, Jewell told officers it was “cheaper by the dozen … a lot cheaper than buying a gram”.

Officers also found deal bags and scales inside a backpack.

Jewell appeared from the remand room at the Geelong Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to possessing the drug of dependence.

Prosecutor David Vanderpol said Jewell was a daily user of amphetamines and claimed to use it to help “give him energy”.

Jewell works in a managerial role at Ocean Grove Pizza and Pasta, where he has been employed for 19 years.

His lawyer, Aleisha McCarron, conceded the “amount of drugs is high” but was told by Jewell it was for “personal use only”.

Magistrate Malcolm Thomas said he did “not accept that”.

“I say that as someone who has practised for 25 years, including a lot of drug matters,” Mr Thomas said.

“I don’t accept it is for personal use.”

Mr Thomas said while he would not sentence Jewell on a charge of trafficking amphetamines, he said he could “draw the inference” with the presence of scales and deal bags that “it is not simply for personal use”.

Mr Thomas said even discounting the weight of the plastic bags the drugs were found in, the amount seized was a “significant quantity” of amphetamines.

“The more amphetamines, the more likely one is to face imprisonment,” Mr Thomas told the court.

“This is a drug measured in the thousands of dollars. It’s drugs that are often consumed in points and people who come to this court with drug addictions often come to court with 0.8g, 2.5g.

“I’ve got someone driving around in a vehicle with 56g,” Mr Thomas said.

Jewell was imprisoned for one month and placed on a 12 month community corrections order, but he appealed the sentence and was released on bail.

He will return to court at a later date.
