Australia Post has revealed its Market Square post office will close its doors from April.

It comes after NAB said it will close its Belmont branch in March, leaving residents with fewer options for physical banking.

An Australia Post spokeswoman said the Moorabool St outlet will close from April 28.

“This outlet has seen a significant drop in customer visits over the past five years,” the spokeswoman said.

“Closing a post office is never an easy decision.”

The Geelong CBD will be left with only one post office, the Australia Post Geelong Business Centre, which is located in Gheringhap St.

Customers will be provided with an option to cancel their PO box or transfer to another outlet.

Australia Post are in the process of working with its staff members on suitable deployment options within the company.

NAB revealed last week it will close its High Street, Belmont branch on March 30.

NAB retail customer executive for Geelong, Tim Clarke, said the site would close due to fewer customers going into branches and more choosing online options instead.

“Over half of our Belmont customers have only visited the branch once in the last 12 months, and more than 76 per cent are already using other branches,” he said.

“The Belmont team will continue helping customers who need additional support with digital banking and introducing them to the nearby Geelong West branch.”

Multiple major banks, including ANZ and Westpac, have closed branches in the Geelong region within the last year.

Commonwealth Bank closed its Drysdale location in September last year due to a drop in physical banking transactions at the branch.

Bendigo Bank permanently closed two of its branches in Belmont and Newcomb last year, blaming staff shortages, after the locations were temporarily shut during Covid lockdowns.

Mr Clarke said staff would be relocated to other job opportunities with the company.

“It’s important to us that there will be no job losses as part of this change,” he said.
