Mavs Greek Restaurant on Little Malop St named best in Victoria

For the second year in a row, much loved Greek restaurant Mavs has taken out a top state award. Now, it will compete on the national level.

Geelong’s favourite Greek restaurant has been named the best in the state for the second consecutive year.

Mavs Greek Restaurant was last week recognised for the best Greek restaurant in Victoria gong, as well as the best family dining in Victoria and Tasmania for 2023 by the Restaurant and Catering Association.

Owners Milton Mavromoustakos and Julia Ryabova said they were ecstatic about the wins.

“It means everything,” Mr Mavromoustakos said.

“It was unbelievable.

“The hard work has paid off.”

Mr Mavromoustakos said the restaurant had been he and his wife’s “life” since first opening six years ago.

“When we got the opportunity on Little Malop St to open the restaurant, it was very scary,” he said.

“Greek restaurants didn’t succeed … but we, me and my wife, we supported each other.

“I’ve done my best at promoting the Greek culture through our restaurant, and through our food.”

He said his favourite part of owning the establishment was how the pair believed in each other, and how much the community had supported them.

Mr Mavromoustakos said the Geelong community gave the pair strength, motivation, “and the energy to keep going and going”.

The restaurant will now compete against other state winners for the national title in each category.

Mavs won bronze for best Greek restaurant at last year’s awards.

Mr Mavromoustakos and Mrs Ryabova said they were excited to fly to Sydney for the national results in November.
