Students at a Grovedale school with a troubled past were put into lockdown while teachers worked to calm a “dysregulated student” last week.

Mandama Primary School parents were told on Friday that students had been put into a lockdown during the previous school day.

In a messages sent via the school’s digital platform, and seen by the Addy, principal Andrew Schaeche said the incident prompted the school to “enact out student safety procedures”.

“Students and staff were asked to remain in their classes while we worked to calm a dysregulated student,” the message said.

“I want to assure you that all students are safe and no-one was injured.

“The health and wellbeing of our students and staff is always our top priority.”

Mr Schaeche said the school took the matter “very seriously” and was working to support all students involved.

“I understand some students and families may be concerned by what happened and wanted to let you know that wellbeing support is available at school if required,” he said.

It is understood police were not required at the incident.

Mr Schaeche was appointed principal of the school in October 2024 and the leadership change following a string of controversies.

Police attend on multiple occasions last year due to student violence, including in May when a boy pulled a knife.

In July 2024, parents alleged a man working on-site at the Geelong primary school asked female students inappropriate questions about their attire.

In 2016, police were called after a man reportedly grabbed a young boy in the toilets.

An education department spokeswoman said it was aware of an incident at Mandama Primary School on Thursday morning.

“No students were harmed, and the school implemented its incident response plan effectively,” she said.

The department’s process requires the school to inform families of classes impacted by these types of incident.
