A man found dead in a CBD storage shed has been identified amid claims he was discovered by a shocked contract worker.

It’s understood a tradesman conducting maintenance works at a private day surgery hospital on Malop St made the grim find on Tuesday afternoon.

Nursing staff inside the facility reported “smelling something odd” in the aftermath of the tragedy.

It’s still unclear how the 20-year-old died or how long he had been inside the small metal unit.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man, believed to be homeless, was located just before 3pm.

Investigators are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage.

Emergency services could be seen gathered on an external landing up a flight of stairs near the structure attached to the Specialist Surgicentre building yesterday afternoon.

The facility is the only stand-alone day surgery in Geelong, opening in 2006.

Numerous tradesmen and nurses could also be seen looking on in disbelief outside the metal shed, between Board Place and Dover Place.

It’s understood several staff members were still upset on Wednesday morning.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

More to come.
