Leonard Casey pleads guilty to threatening to stab ex-wife

A Leopold man who threatened to stab his ex-wife and another man, has fronted court.

A Leopold bricklayer threatened to stab his ex-wife and another man after he found out his former partner wanted to see other people.

Leonard Casey, 55, was convicted and fined after he pleaded guilty to threatening to inflict serious injury and criminal damage.

Casey was living with his ex-wife at their home in Leopold and were separated at the time of the incident which happened October 16 last year.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Stephanie Drake said the victim returned home to have lunch and was confronted by Casey, who asked if she had got the phone number of a man she met on the weekend.

Constable Drake said Casey became agitated by the conversation and said “sometimes I want to stab you” and went on to state “I’m going to find your car where the guy lives…and come in and stab you both”.

The court heard the victim left the kitchen and went to her car and heard the sound of crockery breaking in the kitchen.

When the victim was in the car she saw Casey smashing pot plants on the front porch.

The court heard Casey made full admissions to making the threats and smashing the pot plants when he was interviewed by police.

Casey’s lawyer Ron Davies, said the incident occurred after the breakdown of a 12-year marriage.

“The marriage had been going through some rocky stages…he said they thought they were patching things up,” Mr Davis said.

“He suddenly became aware and had seen this third person, and to him that was a signal that the relationship was coming to end.

“He said he did that out of anger, and certainly showed remorse,” he said.

Magistrate Bernard Fitzgerald said threatening to use a weapon on someone makes it a high level threat.

Mr Fitzgerald convicted and fined Casey $1000.
