A Norlane man wanted in multiple states allegedly strangled a woman, punched her in the face, and threatened to kill her over a financial dispute, a court has heard.

Jye Robbie Potts, 29, is charged with a number of offences, including strangulation and reckless conduct endangering life.

The Geelong Magistrates Court also heard Mr Potts was subject to a warrant in NSW in regards to robbery offences and was also wanted in Tasmania for aggravated driving offences, and also had several warrants in Queensland for driving related offences.

Police informant Senior Constable Ned Weatherly, said the alleged incident occurred on May 15 after the pair engaged in verbal dispute.

Constable Weatherly said Mr Potts is alleged to have charged at the woman, punched her with a closed fist to the face several times on the ground, and said he would kill himself and take her with him.

The court heard Mr Potts allegedly used both of his hands to forcibly squeeze the woman’s neck, causing her breathing to be severely prohibited.

Constable Weatherly told the court the woman said she couldn’t breathe and felt as though she was going to die.

The woman suffered bruising to her right eye and neck, the court heard.

In a separate incident, it is alleged the woman locked herself in the bathroom.

The court heard Mr Potts allegedly kicked the hinges off the door, grabbed the woman and threw her into the bed.

“He grabbed her by the throat, put pressure on her neck, causing her to fear she would be strangled to death,” Constable Weatherly said.

The court heard after the incident, the woman fled to the Geelong police station and Mr Potts was arrested on May 18.

Mr Potts told the court he has spent all his life running and wanted help to address his drug and alcohol problems.

“I’ve had a hard life, I just want help…I can’t keep doing this,” Mr Potts said.

“I will end up dead.”

“At the end of the day I just want the opportunity to get help.”

Magistrate Franz Holzer said although Mr Potts expressed a genuine desire to change, he refused bail.

Mr Potts will be back in court on November 10.
