Jordan Kenyon: Accused killer driver’s lawyer seeks more time after additional information

The lawyer of a man allegedly responsible for the death of a 12-year-old girl in a horrific crash has told a court he needs more time, prompting outrage from the gallery.

The lawyer of a man allegedly responsible for the death of a 12-year-old girl in a horrific crash has told a court he needs more time to discuss the case with prosecutors.

Jordan Kenyon, 29, is alleged to have been responsible for a horror crash in Stonehaven on January 3.

The North Shore man, who appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday via videolink, is accused of a 24 charges, including culpable driving causing death, multiple counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury, drug-driving and breaching parole.

Mr Kenyon faces the prospect of decades behind bars if convicted, with the maximum available sentence for culpable driving causing death being 20 years.

Police allege Mr Kenyon was driving erratically and on drugs before the Stonehaven crash, which resulted in the death of 12-year-old Mia Rossiter and left her family and Mr Kenyon’s alleged passenger in hospital.

A large party of Mia’s friends and family have followed the case and attended the hearing, wearing shirts emblazoned with “Justice for Mia” and “Forever 12”, as well as a photo of the 12-year-old.

In May, the court was told the defence had presented the prosecution with a plea offer, however there was no mention of any offer on Tuesday.

Mr Kenyon’s lawyer, William Blake, told the court he had received four “critical” statements shortly before the hearing, including a toxicology report and three medical reports.

The court heard that the defence had applied to cross-examine two civilian witnesses who “observed the car on the day”, and that the new reports raised “a number of matters”.

Mr Blake told the court he needed more time to discuss the case with the prosecution, and said there was “some prospect of resolution”.

Members of the gallery vented their outrage and frustration at the prospect of a further delay in proceedings, prompting magistrate Ann McGarvie to issue a warning.

“I understand emotions are high, but they must be kept in check,” Ms McGarvie said.

Mr Blake said he “didn’t anticipate further delays” in the matter.

Ms McGarvie told both parties it would be the last adjournment the case got before it is to be committed to the County Court.

“I hope that the information that has been provided today will possibly lead to a resolution,” she said.

Mr Kenyon will reappear in court on July 16.
