A drug-affected man found unresponsive in his car had a bag of meth and weapons, including a taser, axe and large hunting knife, in the vehicle, the Geelong Magistrates Court heard on Friday.

Jake Cannon, 28, was asleep in his car on the side of the Bellarine Highway in Newcomb about 9pm when officers approached on March 4.

Police prosecutor first constable Alex Turner said police removed a drug-affected Cannon from the vehicle and found 6.6 grams of methamphetamine inside a small ziplock bag.

After police found the drugs they made a further search of the car and discovered weapons including a taser, hunting knife, axe, hatchet, saw blade and hammer, Constable Turner said

The court was told Cannon admitted to possessing the meth and weapons, but said he had no knowledge of the taser.

Cannon, who lives in Thomson, pleaded guilty to failing an oral fluid test, possessing amphetamine, possessing methylamphetamine, possessing a prohibited weapon and possessing a controlled weapon.

The court was told Cannon was also stopped by police on June 4, 2022 in St Albans Park and returned a positive test for methylamphetamine.

Cannon was also present at a home in Breakwater on February 6, 2022 when a police search located a bag of meth belonging to him.

Cannon’s lawyer, Adrian Paull, said his client had not been able to stop using meth, but was hoping to get assistance from corrections to get his life back on track.

Magistrate John Bentley convicted Cannon and sentenced him to a community corrections order for 12 months and also disqualified him from driving for 12 months.
