Footage has captured a delivery driver kicking a magpie after dropping off a package at a Grovedale home.

Stewart and Andrea McConachy were left disgusted after the incident was captured on their ring camera on the front door bell on Friday.

It showed the driver kicking the bird, which had flown from the top of a car to the front porch, as he dropped a package off shortly before midday.

Mr McConachy said the bird had been hanging around the front of their house for about a week.

“For any human to do that to a critter is disgusting, from my perspective it’s below humane,” he said.

It’s understood the driver worked for courier iMile and was delivering an order from Chinese online retailer Temu, with both companies set to probe the incident.

An iMile Delivery spokeswoman said the company had been informed of the incident and would be seeking further information to understand the full series of events leading to the moment captured on film.

“iMile Delivery does not condone harm to any wildlife or animals in Australia, or in other countries in which we operate,” she said.

“Operating in the delivery and logistics industry, the daily workplace involves employees being exposed to nature and the great outdoors.

“It’s difficult to control all variables, but this incident has highlighted the need to communicate with Australian staff to remind them to be particularly cautious of magpies during spring months and the onset of the avian breeding season.”

The spokeswoman said iMile regretted any distress caused to the magpie and the residents receiving the package.

A Temu spokesman said the company would also follow up on the incident.

“Temu expects all of our business partners to maintain high standards of professionalism,” he said.

A Conservation Regulator spokeswoman said harming or killing wildlife was illegal and cruel.

“We encourage anyone who sees this happening to report it immediately to Crime Stoppers,” she said.

“Australian magpies are a protected native species in Victoria.”

Mr McConachy said the magpie looked like “just a baby” and had taken a liking to being in the couple’s yard.

All Victorian native wildlife is protected by law and animal cruelty offences carry a fine of up to $92,460, or imprisonment for two years.

People can report wildlife crime such as harassing, harming or disturbing wildlife to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000.
