Greater Geelong records 27 new Covid cases

More than 30 new Covid cases have been reported across the G21 region. It comes as a flurry of easing of restrictions will be pushed through at midnight.

Greater Geelong has recorded 27 new Covid cases.

Three new cases were reported for the Surf Coast on Thursday, while Colac-Otway and Golden Plains each recorded one new case.

It follows 22 revealed in Greater Geelong on Wednesday.

Barwon South West public health unit director Eugene Athan said a number of the new cases in the region were known contacts of confirmed cases and had been isolating.

“Any local cases that are unlinked continue to be investigated by the public health unit,” Prof Athan said.

As of 9am Thursday there were 17 patients in Geelong hospital with Covid-19, 10 of whom

were in ICU.

Victoria reported 1007 new cases and 12 deaths.

Premier Daniel Andrews on Thursday revealed most Covid restrictions would end at midnight, including density limits in most settings for fully-vaccinated people.

Masks will be required in high-risk settings, such as retail, as well as for primary school students in years three to six.

Close contacts of positive COVID cases, if outside of the home, will no longer need to quarantine but will need to get a test and isolate until a negative result is returned.

Crowds will also be back at full capacity at the MCG and events such as the Australian Open.
