Geelong has been hit with its highest June overnight rainfall for six years as the city shivers through its coldest day of the year.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, almost 30mm of rain has fallen at the Geelong Racecourse in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, making it the wettest overnight period for the month since June 3, 2019, when 33mm was recorded.
BOM forecaster Jonathan How said the mercury had also dropped to its chilliest for 2025, with a top of 9C expected on Sunday.
“Certainly in Geelong and down the Otways it’s the best rainfall we have seen for some time,” he said.
“It’s also the coldest couple of days of the year so far.”
Apollo Bay and Aireys Inlet were also soaked with 40mm and 36mm rainfall totals in the last 24 hours.
Mount Sabine, halfway between Lorne and Apollo Bay, recorded the highest across Victoria with 69mm.
Avalon Airport’s 24mm was also the highest since the same day in June 2019.
“It has definitely been moderate rainfall and in some places heavy, with Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine doing the best,” Mr How said.
“The heaviest rain is behind us but there will still be some heavy bursts.”
More showers are expected in Geelong and along the coast on Sunday before becoming isolated overnight.
It comes as emergency services responded to four calls for assistance in Geelong due to flooding.
There are reports of damage to a building on Perry St in Newtown, while water has affected a Grovedale aged care centre, an address on Barrabool Rd in Ceres and a home in Lara.
North Geelong resident, Anthony Ford, said rain had been steady.
“Hopefully it keeps going for the next couple of days,” he said.
Showers are expected to ease on the Kings Birthday public holiday on Monday and into the evening, but cool and cloudy days are in store.
Sunday’s temperature of 9C is the coldest day recorded this year, with the previous coolest 14C.
