Four people have been arrested while buying a drink for the drive home, after attempting to steal as much property from Geelong Westfield as possible.
The offenders left Ballarat on Saturday morning, before arriving at the popular shopping centre before midday, with the intention of stealing “as much property as they could steal,” according to police.
Two remained behind in the car on Yarra St, while an 18-year-old man and a 36-year-old man entered the Myer store on Malop St.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the men “loaded up with as many branded hoodies and shirts as they both could carry”
The pair exited the store with $2.5k worth of product, heading back to the car where a 25-year-old man and his 24-year-old female partner were waiting to depart.
With the female behind the wheel, the group fled the scene.
Police from Geelong and Corio were quickly on their tail, tracking the car to a bottle shop in Church St in Geelong West, where police said “they intended to get a drink for the trip back to Ballarat”.
All were arrested at the scene, and all of the stolen paraphernalia was returned to Myer.
The 36-year-old from Wendouree and the 18-year-old from Ballarat were charged and bailed to appear in court in Geelong next month.
The driver from Creswick was released pending theft inquiries and charged with unlicensed driving, while the passenger from Delacombe was released pending theft inquiries and charged with possess control weapon.
