Turning household rubbish into electricity was the focus of Deakin PhD candidate Apinya Chanthakett’s research.

An international student from Thailand, Dr Chanthakett was motivated by the waste and energy crisis.

She said she wanted to tackle these problems faced internationally.

“I realised that we are all living in a same planet and affected by the same environmental issues,” Dr Chanthakett said.

“I do believe that one person’s action can change the world for good – it is not only for us it is also for our next generation and other creatures.”

As part of her research, Dr Chanthakett collected samples from the Point Henry Resource Recovery and Transfer Centre, and analysed what the waste contained.

She then used a simulation model to work out how much energy could be produced from the components.

“I determined the best process to generate energy with the lowest emissions and lowest price,” she said.

“The best part has been collaborating with others and building professional skills.

“I didn’t want to just get the certificate but learn how I can apply these skills in the future to find better solutions.”

Dr Chanthakett said she would like to contribute her new knowledge to her country.

“We still use traditional landfill and waste-to-energy could be a very good alternative solution,” she said.

Dr Chanthakett is among the more than 1900 Deakin University students, including 81 Doctoral candidates, to celebrate their graduation at ceremonies from October 3-6.

On October 3, students from the schools of humanities and social sciences, communication and creative arts, education, and NIKERI Institute will cross the stage

On October 4, exercise and nutrition science, health and social development, medicine, nursing and midwifery, and psychology students will have their turn.

Law, marketing, management, engineering, architecture and built environment, Institute of Frontier Materials, accounting, Deakin Business School, finance, and information systems and business analytics students will receive their degrees on October 5.

The ceremonies will end on October 6 with the applied artificial intelligence institute, information technology, and life and environmental sciences students.

Across the four days, more than 1900 graduates will cross the stage, including 81 Doctoral candidates.
