A lead-footed driver going almost 90km/h over the speed limit in Norlane and a hoon travelling at 146km/h in South Geelong are among thousands of speed demons nabbed by the region’s speed and red-light camera network.

New data from the Department of Justice and Community Safety has revealed that drivers were fined a total of $8.6m during the 2023/24 financial year.

The region’s road safety cameras recorded almost 29,000 infringements from 13 fixed cameras in that period, an average of 78 a day.

As a result, the state government pocketed an average of $164,900 every week.

The worst examples of speeding included:

  • A Melbourne-bound vehicle travelling at 186km/h along a section of the Princes Freeway in Lara;
  • A vehicle detected driving at 158 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Princes Highway and Sparks Rd in Norlane;
  • A vehicle going 146km/h at the intersection of Moorabool and Fyans streets in South Geelong – exceeding the limit by 86km/h.

The two cameras on the Avalon Rd bridge above the Princes Freeway in Lara accounted for more than half of all fines in the region, totalling $4.6m.

The Melbourne-bound camera, which tallied up more than 11,000 infringements, was the 10th most active camera in the state.

In suburban Geelong, 11 cameras yielded 12,300 fines worth $4m.

More than half of that was made up at a single location – the intersection of Princes Highway and Sparks Rd in Norlane (7580 – $2.1m).

Drivers were also frequently nabbed on the intersections of Princes Highway and Station St in Corio (1374 – $493,476), Thompson Rd and Separation St in Bell Park (693 – $249,912), and Settlement Rd and Torquay Rd in Belmont (614 – $220,636).

However, when compared to the 12 months ending March 2023, the numbers are down.

In that time, there was an extra $2m in fines issued from a further 8000 infringements than the most recent period.

Only three of the 13 cameras registered an increase this time around.

They were located on the intersection of Church St and Shannon Ave, as well as both lanes of the Princes Freeway in Lara.

There were 21 less instances of “hoon driving” – travelling 45km/h or more above the speed limit – compared to the previous period.

A Victoria police spokeswoman said that road safety cameras were crucial to “reducing road trauma” and had played a big role in limiting wrongdoing.

“They have been shown to reduce injury collisions by up to 47 per cent at Victorian intersections,” she said.

“Driving against a red light significantly increases the likelihood of a collision and puts all road users at risk.”
