A car crashed into a Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday morning, causing damage to the vehicle and the building.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were called to the Hellenic Orthodox Community Church at Taliska Ave, Hamlyn Heights just before 09:30 on Sunday morning.

“No emergency medical care or patient transport was required,” he said.

An SES spokeswoman said other emergency services, including police, CFA and SES, arrived at about 10.05am.

“One of the church patrons had accidentally put their vehicle into drive instead of park,” she said.

She said there were reports of “glass everywhere” after the crash smashed the car’s windows, as well some of the building’s windows.

She said the driver, an elderly man, was treated by paramedics at the scene.

No major injuries were reported.

It’s understood a fundraiser scheduled to take place at the church on Sunday was cancelled due to the event.

The event was aiming to raise funds for The Children’s Tumour Foundation (CTF) who is supporting a child in the congregation on her journey to overcome the challenges of neurofibromatosis.

A Victoria polices spokesman said officers also attended the scene.

“It appears to be an elderly driver who has accidentally driven into the church,” he said.

“There is no one trapped and no injuries.”
