The road servicing Waurn Ponds train station is set to undergo a $2.2 million revamp, resulting in road closures that will be staggered to minimise disruption to the area.
The upgrade of Sugargum Drive and Bodega St – from Oakwood Crescent in the west to Rossack Drive in the east – will commence in early November.
It is expected work will be completed by June next year.
Around 11,000 vehicles, including up to 2200 trucks, use the road every week, recent traffic surveys have found.
The works will involve stabilising the road’s surface, kerb and channel upgrades, reflective pavement markers, and line marking upgrades.
To be completed in three stages, during which time that area will be closed to all vehicles, including residents’ vehicles.
Stage 1: Bodega St, from Rossack Drive to Cortona Place.
Stage 2: Bodega St, from Cortona Place to Bollinger St.
Stage 3: Sugargum Drive, from Bollinger St to Oakwood Crescent.
Access to the train station’s car park will not be affected.
The City of Greater Geelong will carry out the project, which is being funded via the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery program.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said the upgrade would result in improved safety, efficiency, and sustainability for the Waurn Ponds community.
“There is no doubt that at times this will be disruptive,” he said.
“The City thanks residents and road users for their patience and understanding while the roadworks are carried out.”
Corangamite MP Libby Coker said councils are the closest level of government to the community, and they deliver the services that people rely on.
“Roads to Recovery funding supports councils to improve local roads and safety, and to deliver the road projects that really matter to local communities,” she said.
