A man who was allegedly stabbed was heard saying “I’m dying” and collapsed on a front lawn in his blood-soaked clothes while the defendant tried to escape the scene, a court has heard.

Damian Norman, 24, of Bell Post Hill, fronted the Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday for a bail application on charges of recklessly causing serious injury in relation to the incident on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Constable Peter Willetts said the 33-year-old man was staying at Norman’s home.

Senior Constable Willets said while Mr Norman’s brother was making coffee in the morning, he heard the man say “ahh, I’m dying”.

The court was told the witness saw the victim falling over and observed a stab wound to his back.

“The accused opened the front door, and as this happened the man came out and fell onto the front lawn with blood coming out of his back,” Senior Constable Willets said.

When police arrived at the address, the man was covered in blood and said he had been stabbed by the accused, the court heard.

Mr Norman is alleged to have fled the address via the backdoor before asking someone to call him a taxi.

He was arrested by police a short time later.

Senior Constable Willets said the complainant suffered three stab wounds. One near the collarbone, one to his back, which punctured his lung, and another to his groin.

The court was told the man would be in hospital for some time. He told police Mr Norman accused him of stealing property, sparking a dispute that resulted in the alleged stabbing.

“A knife was produced and he (the complainant) tried to get away from being stabbed in the back,” Senior Constable Willets said

Senior Constable Willets said police believe Mr Norman got changed before leaving the address and disposed of a knife before leaving the backyard.

“In my opinion, if you are a victim of a robbery, which is what he believes, why would you run from your own house and get changed?”.

Mr Norman represented himself in court and said the events that police allege transpired were “nothing like that” and that he panicked after the incident.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie said there seemed to be considerable evidence against Mr Norman and refused to grant him bail.

“I think you are too great a risk in the community,” Ms McGarvie said.

Mr Norman will be back before the court on October 13.
