Corio dies after horror truck crash in Geelong’s CBD

Police are investigating after a Corio man died after being hit by a truck in Geelong’s CBD.

Media reporting is ‘excusing’ a ‘national scandal’

A man has died after being struck by a tow-truck in central Geelong on Thursday evening.

The 55-year-old pedestrian was hit at the intersection of Latrobe Terrace and Aberdeen St at around 7pm.

Victoria Police confirmed he was taken to taken hospital with life-threatening injuries, but later died.

Police said the driver of the truck stopped and is helping police with inquiries.

“The circumstances surrounding the collision will be investigated,” a spokesman said.

It comes as three other people died on Victoria’s roads in the same 24 hour period.

Road Policing assistant commissioner Glenn Weir said the state was entering a high-risk period on Victorian roads that saw 18 lives lost last year.

“Now is not the time to be complacent when getting behind the wheel,” he said on Friday.

“Slowing down, remaining alert and being extra cautious when roads are wet or visibility is affected are simple, but life-saving measures all motorists can take to protect themselves and other road users.

“Police will remain highly visible and on the lookout for any risky driver behaviour. We are determined to do everything we can to ensure this period does not become synonymous with road trauma

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam footage or any other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
